Common Core Not That Common

Subtitle

What is Common Core?

Common Core is a set of academic standards and not a curriculum.   Students are to achieve these standards in two main subjects which are English and Math.  According to the standards, they were created for students to gain knowledge and skills that can be applied in college, careers and in their life.  The Common Core website states that the standards are:

      Research and evidence based

      Clear, understandable, and consistent

Aligned with college and career expectations

Based on rigorous contend and the application of knowledge through                 higher-order thinking skills

Built upon the strengths and lesson of currents state standards

Informed by other top-performing countries to prepare all students for              success in our global economy and society

Forty-two states, the District the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Education, and four US territories have voluntarily adopted the Common Core standards.  The only states that didn’t adopt these standards are Indiana, Oklahoma, Minnesota, and South Carolina.  This is very alarming to me.  As I continued to look further into the website and search for examples, I found out that children will be taught a long term curriculum.  Long term curriculum will not be necessary at college or in the real world as it is not really applicable due to fast life pace.
