Common Core Not That Common

Who am I?

My name is Maria Bonin.  I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas.  I attended and received my education from Vilas Elementary, Bassett Middle and graduated from Austin High School.   I had amazing teachers who taught me the importance and the power of knowledge.  Throughout my education my teachers made learning a fun experience.  Now, I see education for the younger generation a difficult challenge and not much fun at all.  Common Core has ripped the fun out of learning.

As a young child, my favorite season was summer.  My siblings and friends enjoyed having time off from school.  The days were filled with sunny skies and hot temperatures.  The public swimming pool awaited all of us.  I, on the other hand, missed school for learning to me was fun.   During the summer time, I would use my babysitting money to purchase pencils, colors, paper, and poster boards.  I would gather my siblings and friends in our family living room to play school; since, we needed to cool off from playing outside in the heat.  This was my opportunity to be a teacher and reteach what was taught to me through the past school year.

As, I became a parent, my children’s education was extremely important. I wanted my children to learn and have fun in school through their learning process just like I did as a child. For that reason, I became a substitute teacher in order to stay on track with my children’s education. This was also a way for me to help and assist them with their homework and study skills. Throughout, this period it opened my eyes that my children had different learning capabilities. They were not the same at all. My son was a fast paced learner like me and needed to be challenged in his education. My middle daughter was a slow learner and slow at taking test; therefore, she needed more one on one basis time with her teacher and before and after school tutoring. My last daughter was also a fast paced learner, but needed encouragement and positive feedback to complete schoolwork.

All of my children have successfully graduated from high school. My son and one of my daughters are attending South Louisiana Community College. My other daughter is attending the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. I am very grateful for their teachers from head start all the way to their high school teachers. My kid’s teachers made learning challenging but fun. One day in the future, my children will become parents and I am noticing that my future grandkids education is at risk. Education is a major topic in our nation and in my household; therefore, I am a very concerned parent.
